Geekcorps, through its Rural Radio program, has developed a number of technology solutions that are adapted for rural communities in Mali. After some analysis, Geekcorps and its partner Africare determined that these solutions were not as suitable for northern communities, where the climate and economy are very different.

Cette étude s’interesse à ces nouveaux appareils dans l’optique d’une utilisation pour des centre multimédia en milieu rural au Mali.
L’amélioration de l’accès aux NTIC en milieu rural au Mali est confronté à de multiples problèmes :

Environnement économique défavorable

Conditions climatiques dures

Taux important analphabétisme

Manque d’électricitéLes outils de communication traditionnels sont conçus pour des besoins occidentaux et ne s’ adaptent pas bien aux conditions du milieu rural malien. Une des préoccupation de Geekcorps est de trouver et d’ adapter de nouvelles technologies pour cet environnement. Depuis peu un certain nombre de nouveaux appareils destinés à la consultation internet sont sortis sur le marché.

I studied computer science at l’Université Laval, in Québec, Canada, and I taught some courses there for a while. But, as many of us do, I learned much more outside of the classroom than in the classroom. I have spent a lot of evenings trying new things, experimenting, compiling a Linux kernel, taking apart and studying every little thing I could put my hands on in order to understand how it works. So, you guessed it: I am a geek, a guy who loves computers. But that’s not the only thing I like. I like traveling, discovering other countries, seeing the world.

SchoolNet is a pan-African project that provides services to teachers, students, and school administrators. SchoolNet Mali is Malian-run, Malian-led, and dedicated to making computers more accessible to students and increasing computer knowledge among young people by supplying local schools with the equipment and training that they require.

Since the University of Bamako includes nine campuses spread all over the town, its 5-year-old network not only contains computer rooms and lots of computers wired together, but also involves a wireless network between the campuses. Geekcorps has been giving the university a hand to make their network more robust.
