Radio Belekan will dial up for now

After considering several possibilities for connecting Radio Belekan in Kati, a small city 15 kilometers north of Bamako, to the Internet, GCM and partners decided to use their analog telephone line and a modem as an interim solution.
GCM volunteer Sebastian Henschel setup a gateway server for the already existing local network at the radio station.The modem dials automatically into the ISP as soon as it is turned on, thanks to cron and WvDial. The server runs the localised Linux distribution Kunnafonix, with Apache-SSL, SquirrelMail, Postfix, and UUCP configured to manage the mail system of belekan.radio.org.ml.

GCM Contest: Digital Content.

Encouraging journalists to put text, images, audio online.
GCM has kicked off another contest: The goal of this one is to encourage the creation and dissemination of digital content.
We are going to offer eight Megasticks (combination digital voice recorders/MP3 players/USB memory sticks) to journalists as the prizes.

GCM Concours : Contenu Numérique

Geekcorps connects Mopti.

Mission succeeds despite technical obstacles.
In early May, GCM associate (and former volunteer) Moussa Keita and volunteer Sebastian Henschel went to Mopti, the “Venice of Mali.” Their mission: to connect Radio Jamana, the NGO Nyeta Musow, and the city’s hospital with the local CLIC, which was already connected to the Internet via a VSAT.
